Film screening of The Jacket, as part of WeKonektWeek 2025.
The Jacket (2024) is a portrait of Jamal Hindawi, a Palestinian man living in exile with his family in the Shatila Refugee Camp in Beirut, Lebanon. Alongside his friends, he creates political theater to express their deep connection to their homeland, Palestine, and to reflect on their experience as refugees in Lebanon. When Jamal embarks on a journey to find a lost theater prop, he witnesses how successive political and economic crises have disrupted an entire region and its people.
Belgian filmmaker Matthijs Poppe has built close ties with the Palestinian community in Lebanon since his first visit to Shatila in 2008. In 2017, he graduated from the KASK School of Arts with his acclaimed film Ours is a Country of Words, filmed in Shatila. For his first feature film The Jacket, Poppe continued his collaboration with Palestinian actor Jamal Hindawi and his family. Both films delicately balance documentary and fiction.
