Scientists and artists explore the theme 'Beauty' in brief, surprising, urgent and fiery interventions.
For the fourth year running, VUB and KVS are kicking off the new season and academic year together with Mindblowers. The stage is given to the voices and heartbeats of scientists and artists by means of performances at the crossroads of art, culture and reflection.
This year the theme is 'Beauty', a fascinating concept that artists and scientists have been drawn to for centuries. How do we define beauty and why can art, body and nature be aesthetically pleasing? How does beauty change, what does it teach us, and how can we understand and capture it in art and science? What is the role of beauty in the political discourse and in visions for the future? What does beauty mean in times of crisis? Can it keep us afloat? How do we build a future steeped in beauty and justice, together?
A discussion between Laurent de Sutter (philosopher) and Koen Vanmechelen (artist) and Jean Paul Van Bendegem’s exploration of Pythagoras’ theorem on the piano are but two of the highlights of this edition of Mindblowers.
With also interventions by: Ilse Smolders (expert in drugs and pharmacology), Free De Backer (professor of social sciences ), Peter de Cupere (artist-researcher), Amira Daoudi (graphic and poster designer), Yassin Mrabtifi (dancer and choreographer), Thierry Boutemy (floral artist) and Jean-Charles Zaquine (pâtissier).
